A freelancer selects work samples for a fictional portfolio layout.
Show relevant evidence and explain the contribution behind each example.

StuartKerrs.com is another publication by Stuart Kerr Spindlow. Links to its guides are ordinary editorial links.

A useful freelance portfolio explains who you help, shows relevant evidence and makes the next step clear. Start with two or three well-explained examples. A large gallery with no context asks a prospective client to do too much interpretation.

An illustrative service portfolio

The example below is an original page outline for a fictional freelance writer. It illustrates content and structure. The business, projects and copy are fictional, and no business results are attributed to them.

Illustrative portfolio

Alex Example: website copy for small creative studios

Opening message: I help independent studios explain their services clearly, so prospective clients can understand the work and decide whether to enquire.

Services: a website-message review; a scoped service-page rewrite; a small website-copy project. Each lists the deliverables, required client input and how a quote is agreed.

Selected work
Project cardEvidence shownWhat the annotation explains
Studio services page (self-initiated)An annotated outline and short copy extractHow the copy answers fit, scope and next-step questions
Project briefing worksheet (self-initiated)A sample brief and completed exampleHow evidence and reader needs shape the writing

About: a short, accurate account of relevant skills and the work Alex can take on.

Enquiry wording: Tell me what you are publishing, who it is for and your target date. I will reply with whether the project fits and what information I need to scope it.

The opening names the audience and service. The cards explain decisions. The enquiry asks for enough context to start a conversation without demanding a long brief upfront. On a real site, that invitation needs a working form or monitored contact address.

Adapt the evidence to the service

  • Writer: show a short authorised extract, intended reader and why the structure or wording changed. Explain your contribution if an editor or designer also shaped the work.
  • Designer: show legible images with concise annotations about constraints and decisions. Give meaningful alt text where an image conveys information.
  • Consultant: show a permitted process map, diagnostic or deliverable excerpt. Explain the decision it supported without exposing confidential operations or claiming unmeasured savings.

If you have no clients yet

Write a realistic sample brief and complete a small piece of work against it. Label it “self-initiated example” beside the project title. Explain the assumptions, constraints and what it demonstrates. Do not invent a commission, client logo, testimonial or conversion result.

Employed work, commissioned work and your own reusable materials can have different ownership or confidentiality conditions. Check the agreement and obtain permission before publishing. Use the portfolio-permission checklist and case-study template for the project detail.

Choose the minimum useful pages

A small portfolio can combine introduction, services, selected work and contact on one page. Add a separate case-study page when the project needs a fuller explanation. Include an accurate about section and the privacy information your enquiry process requires. Keep navigation descriptive and check it without relying on an animation or hover.

A simple route or a website builder?

I have used Squarespace. For a freelance portfolio, I recommend judging the platform against the work you need to show, how you will maintain the pages and how a prospective client will contact you.

A concise PDF or a credible existing professional profile may be enough for a few direct introductions. Use a PDF when you need a tailored selection quickly, but remember to update the copies you send. A branded website becomes useful when you need one maintained destination for repeated referrals, project detail and enquiries.

Squarespace offers portfolio layouts and hosted site tools. It may suit a freelancer who prefers managing pages within a builder and can sustain the subscription. Choose based on the actual portfolio, editing needs and enquiry path. Avoid paying for commerce features just because they appear in a higher plan.

Check the GBP checkout price, monthly versus annual commitment, taxes, domain renewal and any separate email or scheduling subscription. The public pricing page can vary by location and billing selection; a verified UK checkout total was not available for this guide, so no fixed pound price or discount is promised. A paid site creates a recurring cost even in months without enquiries.

Use Squarespace plans for the current offer. For broader platform selection, see the same publisher’s website-builder comparison. Current plan information was checked against official documentation. Check your own published pages and enquiry route before directing clients to them.

Squarespace Basic or Carrd Pro Standard?

Compare these for the same job: one freelancer, a branded portfolio and an enquiry route, without a shop. I would choose Carrd Pro Standard for a compact one-page portfolio and Squarespace Basic for a growing collection of separate case-study pages. Carrd's narrower format encourages a concise page; Squarespace's portfolio structure gives projects more room. A PDF still wins for a tailored selection sent to a few contacts when a maintained website is not yet justified.

Carrd Pro Standard lists custom domains and forms at US$19 per year. That is about US$1.58 a month as an annual-cost equivalent, not monthly billing. Domain registration, applicable tax and currency-conversion charges are additional. Do not select Pro Lite for this comparison: it does not provide the same custom-domain and form capabilities.

The Squarespace pricing page checked on 28 September 2026 returned a different regional currency, so I cannot substantiate a current UK checkout total or a like-for-like price saving here. Before subscribing, compare the GBP total payable now, the annual commitment or monthly billing choice, applicable taxes, renewal price and separate domain or email charges. Treat any introductory or first-year inclusion separately from the ongoing cost.

For this portfolio task, I would shortlist Carrd for a compact one-page site and Squarespace when separate project pages and a broader structure justify the recurring cost. This is a choice about the job, not a verified UK price ranking or a performance test. Neither has been established here as a speed or conversion winner. Squarespace's portfolio documentation explains the project presentation options.

Publish and check the enquiry path

  1. Write the content before adjusting a template’s decoration.
  2. Add only authorised work and label illustrative samples clearly.
  3. Use descriptive project titles and a page description that matches your actual service.
  4. Preview on a narrow screen: check readable extracts, images and contact controls.
  5. Navigate with a keyboard and confirm links and visible focus.
  6. Submit a test enquiry to an inbox you control, check receipt, and test a reply.
  7. Remove draft placeholders and verify the public pages after publishing.
